Fallon’s words felt like a blow to the face. “His father?”

Fallon immediately looked guilty. “He didn’t tell you? I shouldn’t have said anything, if Eodan didn’t want you to know—it’s just I didn’t think it was a secret.”

“It’s all right.” Ginnevra wished she’d kept her composure, made Fallon believe she already knew about Cathail. “Eodan doesn’t talk much about his past, and I’m sure his family is part of that. I didn’t even know about Ronan until we met him at the Marchese estate. Don’t worry about it.”

Fallon gave a little shake of his head. “My mistake. Don’t tell Eodan I told you, all right? If he didn’t mention Cathail before, he must have a reason.”

“I agree, and I won’t say anything.” Ginnevra let out a deep breath. “Look. About Vonissa. Suppose you could tell her the truth—tell her family the truth—and she accepted you as a werewolf. Would that let you stay?”

“If you’re about to tell me you’ll stand with me, you can forget it,” Fallon said promptly. “You may be able to protect Eodan, but you won’t be here forever, and these people don’t know or trust you. Even being a paladin won’t change that.”

“We have to start somewhere, Fallon.” Ginnevra chewed her lip in thought. “You said Vonissa’s family knows you and likes you?”

“The person they think I am, sure.”

“You shouldn’t underestimate humans. People who would be terrified if a stranger turned out to be a werewolf are likely to withhold judgment of a friend or loved one revealed to be the same. You’ve established a reputation. They’re predisposed to think well of you.”

Fallon’s lips made a tight, hard line, and he said nothing for a moment. Ginnevra waited. Finally, he said, “What exactly are you proposing?”

“I think I should introduce myself and Eodan to them,” Ginnevra said. “Explain about the werewolves who turn their backs on the Bright One. Then, if they react well, you can reveal the truth about yourself—maybe just to Vonissa, maybe to everyone. If they don’t react well, maybe you’ll end up leaving Vonissa with a lie. But I really believe you should give them a chance. And I also really believe you should tell the others about who you’ve fallen in love with.”

Fallon chuckled. “You’ve reminded me I have two families who might turn on me. I haven’t wanted to say anything to Ronan and the others because I didn’t believe it affected them, not if I planned to leave with them in the spring. But you’re right, if I’m going to tell Vonissa and her family the truth, they need to be prepared to flee.”

“Or be prepared to let the whole neighborhood know,” Ginnevra said. “For all you know, the humans of Southside will welcome you with open arms, and none of you will leave in the spring.”

Fallon raised an eyebrow. “Eodan said you were the world’s greatest optimist. I guess he was right.”

Ginnevra blushed. “It’s brought me success past believing. Did he tell you about the dragon?”

“Dragon?”

Ginnevra clapped Fallon on the shoulder.
